Triple J bonanza

BY NELSON BENJAMIN

JOHOR BARU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has collected a record RM3.26mil from the popular triple-J series, which opened for tender last month.

Ten golden numbers alone – ranging from JJJ1 to JJJ10 – fetched a total of RM551,000.

“This is a record. It is the highest amount the JPJ has collected for any series nationwide,” JPJ director-general Datuk Emran Kadir said, referring to biddings for the JJJ series.

Emran said most of the top bidders lived outside Johor.

He added that the successful bidder for JJJ1 paid more than RM150,000 for the number but declined to disclose his identity.

The JJJ series was divided into four main categories – golden, popular, interesting and others.

The Star had reported that hundreds of motorists thronged the state JPJ headquarters to get “JJJ” numbers when it opened for tenders on Oct 14. On that day alone, JPJ had accepted bids totalling about RM250,000 from over 800 applicants.

Some motorists had driven all the way down south from other states, just to make sure they got their favourite number preceded by a triple J.

Those who selected JJJ numbers between 1001 and 9999 paid RM310 for the numbers if there were no other bidders. The normal registration fee is RM27.

On another issue, Emran said as of Wednesday, there were 388,015 cars and 245,204 drivers who had been blacklisted nationwide for various offences.
