2,700 more flee homes as Kedah floods worsen

ALOR STAR: Floodwaters continued to rise in Kota Star district in Kedah, forcing another 2,812 people to flee their homes.

As at 2pm yesterday, 7,559 people in the Kota Star district had been evacuated. This brings the total number of evacuees in the state to 18,941.

Water started rising in several government buildings in the city, including the Youth and Sports Department and the Prisons Department quarters.

Water also entered the parking area of two private hospitals on Lebuhraya Darulaman and Jalan Pintu Sepuluh.

Five roads in the district were closed to traffic, bringing to 12 the number of roads affected by floods since Sunday.

The water level at three rivers in the district remained above danger level – Sungai Baru at 3.75m (danger level at 3.05m), Sungai Pantai Johor at 4.73m (3.05m) and Sungai Kepala Batas at 5.29m (4.5m).

The situation improved in Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap districts.

However, 16 stretches of roads in the two districts remained closed to traffic.
