Top seed Moya cruises into the last eight

BUENOS AIRES: Top seed Carlos Moya recorded another straight-sets win at the US$380,000 Buenos Aires Open on Wednesday while third seed Guillermo Canas was knocked out.

Moya, who won the first of his 18 ATP singles titles at the same event 10 years ago, needed only one hour 12 minutes to dispatch Argentina's Juan Monaco 6-1 6-2.

The Spaniard now plays Mariano Puerta, another Argentine, in the quarter-finals.

Canas, who enjoyed the best season of his career last year by claiming three titles, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Spain's Alberto Martin.

The Argentine's frustration got the better of him at the end of the first set when he was given an official warning for twice throwing his racket to the ground.

  • SANTIAGO: Double Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu will miss Chile's Davis Cup World Group match in Russia next month because of a toe injury.

“Unfortunately, Nicolas is definitely ruled out for the Davis Cup,” team doctor Alejandro Orizola told reporters on Wednesday.

Massu, 18th in the ATP entry rankings and his country's number two, won gold in the doubles and singles at the Athens Games last year, the first two gold medals in Chilean Olympic history. – Agencies
