Lottery win turns relationship sour

KUALA LUMPUR: They came from the same village in Perak and fell deeply in love despite the gap of 17 years between them.

But the relationship apparently turned sour when money came into the picture.

The two had allegedly fought over an undisclosed amount of lottery prize money, won by the man recently.

Yesterday, the 23-year-old woman was found murdered with nine stab wounds – five on her face and the others on her head and shoulder – in a hotel room in Jalan Barat off Jalan Imbi here.

The couple had checked into the room last September.

Liew Pai Sea, from Chemor, was found naked and sprawled on the bathroom floor at 7am by the police.

Her hands and legs were tied with torn pieces of clothing.

Her lover, a 40-year-old unemployed, was arrested on the spot when a police team, acting on a distress call, broke into the room.

“We recovered in the room some items used for taking syabu and believe the suspect was high on drugs.

“Police also found some sharp objects like pieces of broken bottles, scissors and compact discs in the room,” said City deputy CID chief Asst Comm Ramli Din.

The items will be sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis.

The couple checked into a room under the suspect’s name. However, the room was transferred to Liew recently as the man was said to be leaving the country soon.

Police believe a fierce fight took place before the victim was killed as the small room was in a mess, with clothing scattered around and strands of hair all over the bathroom.

Sources said the couple had been fighting over money after the man was believed to have won tens of thousands of ringgit from a lottery game.

ACP Ramli said the case had been solved and police were investigating its motive.

A hotel caretaker said a worker had suspected something amiss when he saw bloodstains outside the couple’s room. The police was then alerted.
