Hisham: Examine Jawi’s authority
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth has called for the authority and powers of the Federal Territory Religious Department (Jawi) to be examined in the wake of recent criticisms against the department over the arrest of more than 100 Muslim revellers at a popular nightspot here.
The movement said no one should be victimised and no party should abuse the authority given to them.
Umno Youth president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said that in calling the faithful to carry out the obligation of amar maaruf nahi mungkar (follow the good and stay away from the bad), Islam wanted them to always be fair.
“In carrying out this obligation, parties that are given the authority must look at the scope of the powers given to them aside from holding to principles of justice enshrined in the religion,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
In this respect, he added, the authority and mandate given to Jawi must be studied.
“At the same time, while looking at the aspects of justice and authority, it is important for the authoritative party to carry out its duties with credibility and wisdom,'' he said, referring to the Jawi raid on Jan 20.
“Don't let it come to a situation that results in certain parties being victimised and others taking advantage of their power,” he added.
Hishammuddin's statement came amid reports that his movement and Puteri Umno were at loggerheads over the incident.
While Puteri chief Noraini Ahmad had reportedly said she was sympathetic and had offered help to those involved, Umno Youth's religious bureau chairman Shamsul Najmi Shamsuddin had been critical of the young people's behaviour and supportive of Jawi.
The merrymakers had alleged that they were held for 10 hours at the Jawi headquarters after they were nabbed.
During that time, they claimed the Jawi officers had humiliated and harassed some of the detained women with bawdy remarks about their attire.
