Matta creates a relaxed atmosphere
By M. KRISHNAMOORTHYKUALA LUMPUR: A relaxed atmosphere and plenty of entertainment – that’s what potential holidaymakers will be having when bargain-hunting at the three-day Malaysian Association of Tours and Travel Agents (Matta) fair which starts today.
There will be live music performances, rest benches and foot massage. Those purchasing holiday packages qualify for several contests which offer attractive prizes.
Also for the first time, educational talks are being organised. The topics include travel insurance, visa applications procedures by the US Embassy, career opportunities in the hospitality industry, and feng shui tips on travel.
Matta president Tunku Datuk Seri Iskandar Tunku Abdullah said the 80,000 visitors expected were given avenues to relax because of the amount of walking they would need to do as the exhibition covers four halls at the Putra World Trade Centre.
He said that they wanted the visitors to take their time and enjoy the fair in a relaxed manner so that they would return to every Matta fair.

“Matta has over the recent years, successfully repositioned this event to be more balanced with domestic, regional and international exhibitors vying side-by-side twice a year.
“We have one of the best bargains for travellers under one roof,” Tunku Iskandar told reporters yesterday.
In the past 15 years, Matta has organised 18 national travel fairs and it is the premier consumer travel event in the country.
“We are happy that the Tourism Ministry, Tourism Malaysia and travel organisations are participating actively.
“Many airlines are giving their full support not only as exhibitors but also by extending value-for-money airfares designed to entice consumers to travel,” she said.
There will be over 750 booths with 200 exhibitors.
The participants include 20 national tourism organisations, state tourism organisations, travel agents, hotels, airlines, resorts, theme parks and tour operators.
The organising committee chairman, Ngiam Foon, said there would be several contests for the visitors.
“One such contest is by Visa International, one of the main sponsors of the fair. They will be having an hourly draw where those purchasing holiday packages stand to win RM1,000 plus an electrical item per draw, besides the grand prize of RM20,000.
“There are others such as the UOB Holiday Spree Contest, Citibank Lucky Dip, and Matta’s Buyers Contest,” he said.
There will also be performances at the fair. Star Cruise will organise the Brazilian dancers and the Royal London Circus will also be there to entertain.
In addition, there will be a batik fashion show and cultural shows by travel trade personnel from Korea, Taiwan other countries.
