Seals draw crowds to PD
PANTAI Bagan Pinang in Port Dickson has become a centre of attraction after a group of seals appeared in the area two months ago and was still sighted early this week, Berita Harian reported.
News of the seals drew a lot of people to the beach every day.
A resident, Mazlan Ahmad, 34, said he could not believe it at first when he saw eight seals playing in the water about 10m from the beach at about 9am on Monday.
I was strolling along the beach when I spotted eight seals playing near the beach but when I tried to get closer, they dived back into the sea, he said.
Akademik Kembara Nusantara Sdn Bhd marine researcher Dr Razali Mohamad Rias said there was a possibility that the tsunami on Dec 26 last year had disrupted the sea base and affected the pattern of the animals' migration between the South and North Poles.
Berita Harian reported that about 320 to 400 fishing boat operators in Hutan Melintang and Bagan Datoh had not gone out to sea since last week following an increase in the price of diesel for fishermen.
The remaining boat operators who were still going out to fish were expected to follow suit by Tuesday if the diesel price remained at RM1.25 per litre.
We will have to take this step because boat operators can no longer bear the losses incurred (from the diesel price increase), said Hilir Perak Fishermen's Corporation chairman Kee Kwee Foo.
He said the corporation hoped the price of the fuel could be reduced to 90 sen per litre for the fishermen.
