MyKad can gain entry to government offices
BY SA’ODAH ELIASPUTRAJAYA: MyKad may soon be accepted as a pass to enter government offices and private buildings.
The National Registration Department plans to encourage this use for the new national identity card and do away with the need for the public to exchange their MyKad for security passes when they visit certain places.
NRD director-general Datuk Wan Ibrahim Wan Ahmad pointed out that under the National Registration Act 1959 and National Registration Regulations 1990, it was wrong for any party to keep another person’s identity card for whatever reason.
However, he agreed that now it had become an accepted practice for people to hand over their MyKads for security passes.
The provision prohibiting any party from keeping ICs belonging to others, he said, included police personnel manning government buildings.
“However, we don’t usually implement this provision in cases like this because the act of surrendering the IC or MyKad is done voluntarily by the holders,” he said.
Wan Ibrahim added that it would be risky for MyKad to be held by others as it could be misused because MyKad had eight applications involving money, including the Touch n' Go function and the E-cash facilities.
The use of MyKad as visitors’ security passes in buildings, he said, would not burn a hole in the building owners' pockets as the technology was not very expensive.
He said the use of MyKad as a security pass had already been implemented by the Port Klang Authority where visitors could just swipe their MyKad to gain access to its building once they had been vetted by the security personnel.
Wan Ibrahim said the move would not compromise the security of government and private buildings, as the managements could still vet their visitors.
He said the only new thing was that visitors could use their own MyKad as security passes instead of surrendering them to the security personnel.
