Cops smash gambling ring

SHAH ALAM: A gambling syndicate that raked in more than RM10mil in profits over the past two years by preying on Indonesian construction workers has been crippled with the arrest of nine of its members.

They were picked up from a shoplot in Taman Sri Muda, which was used as a gambling den. Police also seized about 10 sets of bola golek (a roulette-like game) gambling items.

The suspects, including the 40-year-old mastermind, were arrested by Insp Razali Ismail at 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Deputy State CID chief Asst Comm Rahman Husin said the syndicate had done a good job of creating an “attractive game,” with a colourful square board to lure betters.

ACP Rahman said gambling activities were usually organised at night at the various construction kongsi.

“They lure the Indonesian workers into the game by offering them RM10 for every RM1 winning bet,” he said at a press conference here.

He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been making more than RM500,000 a month.
