Mufti: Place AIDS patients on island
BY KULDEEP S. JESSYIPOH: Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria has suggested that people with AIDS and avian influenza be cast away on an island to ensure they do not infect others.
He said isolation or quarantine which was imposed at one time against lepers and those with other diseases such as tuberculosis would be the best way to stop any dangerous disease from threatening and spreading among the people.
It is time this suggestion is seriously taken into consideration by the various parties involved.
Those with AIDS, avian influenza and any other dangerous disease, should be isolated so that the disease or virus they carry will not threaten others, he said after attending the state level Maulidur Rasul celebration which was attended by about 2,000 people at the state secretariat building here yesterday.
Giving an example, Harussani said that quarantine was imposed on Madinah at one time when there was an outbreak of cholera.
Harussani added that he had during a medical seminar about six years ago suggested that those with AIDS be cast away on an island but added that his suggestion received negative response as those present felt that it was an inhumane act to do so.
