Chelsea get green light to seek compensation
LONDON: Chelsea have been given permission by the Premier League to seek compensation from former striker Adrian Mutu who they sacked in October for taking cocaine.
The 26-year-old Romanian, serving a seven-month worldwide ban for his positive test, joined Juventus on a five-year contract in January. His ban expires on May 18.
The Appeals Committee concluded that the conduct of the player in taking banned drugs was gross misconduct which entitled the club to treat the players contract as at an end and amounted to a unilateral breach without just cause or sporting just cause, the Premier League said on Wednesday.
The club are therefore entitled to proceed to seek compensation and sporting sanctions from the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) of FIFA.
Chelsea, seeking to recoup some of the loss they made on Mutu, who joined from Parma for nearly £16mil in August 2003, said they had been vindicated.
Chelsea Football Club are obviously pleased that the Appeals Committee have vindicated the clubs position and opened the door for a compensation claim and sporting sanctions before FIFAs Dispute Resolution Chamber, the league leaders said in a statement.
Chelsea will continue to pursue the case vigorously as the principle is an important one. Reuters
