Ailing Anderson need win badly to keep last eight hopes alive

BY PETER CHAN

IPOH: Ailing schools champions Anderson need a win against SMK Datuk Taha at the Azlan Shah Stadium here today to boost their hopes of a quarter-final berth in the Malaysia Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

Anderson are still without a win after three matches and have only a point to show from their 1-1 draw with Tenaga Nasional in their opening match.

Last week, they lost two straight home matches - going down 4-1 and 4-2 to double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and favourites Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) respectively.

Now, Anderson desperately need to pick themselves up to stay in the running for a berth in the last eight. Their last two matches are against Olak and BJSS Juniors.

“My boys know that we have to win if we want to make it into the quarter-finals. Everything could go up in smoke if we fail to collect full points,” said Anderson coach Mokhtar Baharuddin.

Mokhtar is well aware that it will not be easy as his boys have not been performing to expectations.

In both their matches last weekend, Anderson started promisingly but fell apart after the breather due to lack of concentration.

“We started well and we also created some good scoring chances but the forwards lacked the experience to finish it off positively.

“The players also failed to focus on their task in the second half which resulted in them being out-thought, out-powered and out-played,” explained Mokhtar, adding that his boys have put the two defeats behind them.

Datuk Taha also need to win to stay in the running and Mokhtar said that would make them dangerous.

“This means it’s not going to be easy. We have to be on our toes right from the whistle until the end of the game. We can’t afford another slip or it could prove fatal,” he said.
