Beh sisters not expected to shine in Shanghai
PETALING JAYA: The Beh sisters, Lee Wei and Lee Fong, are set to represent Malaysia in the World Individual Table Tennis Championships.
The Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) will be naming a four-man and five-woman team this week for the championships, which will be held in Shanghai from April 30-May 6.
However, the Malaysians are not expected to make an impact. The meet is part of their preparation for the Manila SEA Games at the end of the year.
The TTAM's secretary, Chan Foong Keong, said: The field (in the world championships) is too strong. Our players are not even ranked among the top 100 in the world.
But playing against top players from the other countries will be a good experience ahead of the SEA Games.
The world individual and team events are held on alternate years.
At last year's team event, Malaysia were 53rd in the women's competition while the men finished in 66th spot.
In the 2003 individual championships in Paris, Lee Wei and Lee Fong did not make it to the tournament proper in the singles and they were knocked out in the first round of the doubles.
Foong Keong said that in the SEA Games, they harboured hopes of winning silver medals in the doubles events through Lee Wei-Lee Fong and Chan Koon Wah-Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim.
Our player from China, Yao Linjing, is still not eligible to play for us in the Manila Games.
But Singapore and Myanmar will have China-born players to win medals for them.
If the draw favours us, we can look forward to win at least one silver medal, he added.
At the last Games in Vietnam, the 21-year-old Lee Wei, an eight-time national champion, was the sole medal contributor for Malaysia in table tennis winning the singles bronze medal.
