Jawi willing to mediate in rift between Nasha and dad

THE Federal Territory Religious Department (Jawi) is ready to mediate in the rift between actress-cum-model Nasha Aziz, 35, and her biological father, who is suing her for defamation, reported Berita Harian.
The paper quoted Jawi director-general Che Mat Che Ali as saying that both the father and daughter could seek help and counselling from its syariah law department to resolve their conflict.
He hoped the matter could be settled amiably out of court, adding that the crisis between Nasha and Abdul Aziz Mohd Ali, a 57-year-old silat teacher and businessman, was a small family matter that could be easily resolved.
“Legal suits concerning family matters shouldn’t happen in the Islamic community. Muslims can refer to the state religious departments regarding family issues, instead of bringing such matters to court,” he said.
For the past several days, the Malay press had been reporting the feud between Nasha and her biological father, following remarks made by the artiste in a weekend paper last October that her bapa (father) had died.
Nasha clarified later that bapa was a reference to her foster father Abdul Aziz Hashim, who had taken care of her since she was an infant, and not her biological father.
On another matter, Utusan Malaysia reported on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad lamenting the lack of discipline among Malays when it comes to repaying loans.
He said they should be stricter with themselves about paying off their debts to avoid negative perceptions from the banking institutions and the Government.
Dr Mahathir said if such negative views persist, it would create difficulties to new applicants for loans to set up businesses.
“Years ago, there were banks who asked borrowers if they were Malays before loans were approved”, he said.
“This is because the Malays have been ‘branded’ as people who don’t repay their loans and cannot be trusted,” he added.
