Former Afghanistan envoy Khalilzad nominated as U.S. ambassador to Baghdad
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush nominated Zalmay Khalilzad, a former ambassador to Afghanistan, to be the next ambassador to Iraq.
If confirmed by the Senate, the Afghan-born Khalilzad would succeed former Ambassador John Negroponte in Baghdad. Negroponte went from that job to become the new national intelligence chief.
Tuesday's nomination of Khalilzad came as no surprise. A month ago, he joined Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at a ceremony where she announced that he was being assigned to the Baghdad embassy.
