Samy Vellu: Cabinet to decide on new design for bridge
KUALA LUMPUR: A new design for the bridge to replace the Causeway and the request for a realignment of the East Coast Highway will be tabled in the Cabinet in two weeks for a final decision, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said here.
“We will abide by the decision of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. If he wants us to proceed with the work, we will do it but if he wants changes, we will take his advice,” he said.
He said Terengganu had appealed for a change in the highway's route, while the bridge design had been completed.
Speaking to reporters after launching the MIC Youth, Wanita and Puteri joint general assembly, Samy Vellu said work on the Singapore-Malaysia bridge project, which had stopped, would resume after a decision.
“We are awaiting word from the Foreign Ministry on the progress of the discussions with Singapore,” he said.
On the East Coast Highway, he said that the Cabinet and not the ministry made the decision to realign it as requested by the state government.
“We will bring the request of Terengganu to the Cabinet so that we can get views of the other ministries,” he said.
Samy Vellu said Terengganu had requested for the realignment of the second phase of the highway so that it would pass through several towns to create more development.
