Parliament to go live on the Internet
KUALA KANGSAR: Parliamentary sessions will be aired live on the Internet.
The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Backbenchers Club to show the proceedings via a website, said club chairman Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad.
The website would start showing sessions of the Dewan Negara first, he added.
“This means that if you have Internet access, you can follow live parliamentary proceedings,” he said after opening the Padang Rengas Umno division delegates' meeting near here yesterday.
Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Aziz, who is the division's chairman.
Many quarters, including Barisan Nasional and opposition MPs, have been asking for parliamentary sessions to be aired live over TV.
Shahrir, who is Johor Baru MP, said broadcasting the sessions live on TV would be costly, adding that some networks have already been airing specific parliamentary segments.
Mohd Nazri said he had forwarded the proposal to the Cabinet for the proceedings to be shown via the website.
In his speech earlier, Shahrir said Umno members should not regard the party as a “money-making establishment” for them.
He said Umno's poor showing in the 1999 general election was due to the members' complacency.
“Members were lazy to discharge their duties,” he added.
Shahrir urged members at the branch and division levels to “work hard and not to resort to doing their homework a day or two before.”
