Just the thing for old boys to stay connected

PENANG: The Global Malaysians Network will help the Old Frees Association to reach out to its estimated 2,000 members around the world, deputy president Johnny Ooi said.

Describing the launch of the network as timely, he said the association now sent bulletins to update members about its activities.

“Our present way takes time. With this network, it will be easier for us to stay connected,” he added.

Old Xaverians Association (OXA) president Dr Goh Cheng Teik said the network would enable Malaysians worldwide to connect to each other instantly.

This would pave the way for the emergence of a global Malaysian community, he added.

He said OXA and the Xaverians Club of Kuala Lumpur had identified more than 1,000 alumni living and working abroad.

Johor Baru Tionghua Association manager Eric Ku said the network could not be more timely, as the association was looking for feedback and ideas for its soon to be set up Chinese heritage museum.

With the network now in place, the association could get feedback from Malaysians around the world on how to conceptualise the museum.

“We want it to be extraordinary and exciting and we believe that Malaysians overseas can help throw up some suggestions as they have seen a lot of things and have been to places,'' he said.

“It (the network) can be used as a platform not only to interact, but also to share experience, ideas and provide assistance,” he added.

Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association deputy president Datuk Ooi Foh Sing said the network would allow people to get an idea of the accomplishments of Malaysians.

“Perhaps Malaysians abroad will be able to share their experiences overseas, and people will be able to see what Malaysians are capable of,” he said.

Foo Wan Thot, chairman of Council of Perak Chinese School Committees, welcomed the idea of the network which could help keep track of Malaysians worldwide.

“This will also help connect the Malaysian Chinese abroad as it is important to remain true to their roots,” he added.
