Fake RM1 coin ring busted
KUALA LUMPUR: Syndicates hoping to hit the jackpot are using fake RM1 coins in slot machines at casinos in Genting Highlands.
Bags of these coins are also being sold to gamblers.
It is learnt police made the discovery when they detained three men and seized thousands of ringgit worth of fake RM1 coins during an operation on Thursday.
The three in their 30s, were driving to the highland resort when they were arrested about 6pm. Bagful of coins were found in the car boot.
Federal Commercial crime director Comm Datuk Hairuddin Mohamed confirmed the arrest and said investigations were still ongoing.
Sources said such syndicates regularly targeted the highland resort as RM1 coins were widely accepted.
He said a bag containing some 1,000 pieces of fake coins could be sold for about RM200 to RM400.
Syndicates also regularly circulate fake coins at toll booths, Hairuddin said, adding that most of the coins were made in Ipoh.
