Dr Alvin Hee, a scientist based in Canterbury, New Zealand, who gave the project his full endorsement, urged fellow Malaysians to throw their support behind the project. “It is my hope that this initiative will receive the support not only from us Malaysians abroad, but all Malaysians.
“Let us share our wealth of knowledge, lessons and ideas to build a better Malaysia,” Dr Hee, an avid follower of Star Online, the online version of this newspaper, said in an e-mail to The Star.
Professional graphic designer Philip Ong, in his e-mail, expressed delight with the initiative to link all Malaysians, saying: “I am very happy to join and support this worthwhile cause.”
“Congratulations to your organisation for setting up this wonderful website to tie Malaysians worldwide together. Keep up the good work,” wrote Ong, who has been living in New York for 14 years.
Other overseas Malaysians also took time to post their messages of support at the Global Malaysians Network website (www.globalmalaysians.com).
V. Gopikrishnan, an engineer based in Nigeria, reminded Malaysians to keep up the good work in the nation's interest, adding that national unity should take precedence above everything else.
Tan Bee Ean, a student in France, joined the chorus, saying: “The world is evolving, so you shouldn’t be left behind.”
Britain-based bond trader Raymond Sagayam said that he had met many foreigners who were very keen to invest in Malaysia.
“While the allure of living and working abroad is very high, and in many instances provides us with a well-rounded experience in life, the progress, development and opportunities in Malaysia are astonishing,” he said.
Today 300 more signed up for the Global Malaysians Network directory, bringing the total to 1,700.
An initiative by the Asian Centre for Media Studies and supported by The Star, the project is aimed at networking Malaysians and enabling them to tap into the resources of their countrymen worldwide.
Malaysians, their family members and expatriates who have worked or are currently working in Malaysia or those with investments in the country can participate in the network.
