Nuraini diagnosed with SLE

BY FARIDAH BEGUM

KUANTAN: National service trainee Nuraini Abu Bakar has Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

The 18-year-old was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease when she was referred to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here on May 5 by the army clinic she went to during her national service (NS) stint in Cherating.

Hospital director Dr Ahamad Shukri Che Hussin said yesterday that Nuraini has been on treatment for a month.

“It is still too early to tell if she is responding to treatment,” he added.

Nuraini, who is from Felda Panching Utara near here, has declined an offer to further her studies at the Tun Abdul Razak Technology University due to rashes on her face and head.

When met at the hospital where she had gone for follow-up treatment yesterday, Nuraini said she was thankful that Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah had arranged for her to be treated by a skin specialist in Kuala Lumpur.

She would meet the specialist on Saturday together with Panching state assemblyman Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail.

“I can only leave it to the doctors to treat me and pray to God to relieve me of this illness,” she said.

SLE is a chronic disease whereby the body’s immune system is directed against body tissues.

Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, Bernama quoted Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin as saying that the Government would pay Nuraini's medical expenses.

He said the Government was waiting for a medical report to determine whether Nuraini suffered from the disease before or after her NS stint.

“The report is expected this week,” he said after a ministry Maulidur Rasul function here.

He said the doctor who had treated Nuraini had handed over the report to the National Service Training Committee.

Zainal Abidin said all NS trainees were covered by insurance borne by the Government and so far two trainees had received compensation for accidents they had been involved in during training.
