Learn all about PC security
BY KHOR SOW YEE
KUALA LUMPUR: If you are sick of your personal computer (PC) crashing and being bogged down by pop-ups or infected by viruses whenever you go online, an upcoming workshop could be the answer to your problems.
The How to Protect Yourself on the Net workshop, a one-day hands-on programme on July 31, promises to equip participants with practical tools to safeguard their privacy and security while using their PC.
The workshop, a collaboration between The Star and Informatics College, is part of The Star's Learning Skills Workshop Series 2005.
Madeline Mok, Informatics public relations and marketing communications senior manager, said participants could expect to gain not just defence strategies to protect their privacy but also greater insights into PC security.
“The workshop is meant for working professionals who know how to use the computer, but who may not understand how their privacy is being invaded while working on the PC or surfing the Internet,” she said.
Madeline added that with so many business professionals relying on their PCs to get their work done, it was crucial to secure important information.
“Imagine if your competitor has access to presentations, quotations and tender information on your PC; they could undercut you or steal the deal from you. PC security can make or break a business deal,” she said.
The workshop will begin with an introduction to PC security, covering common threats from the Internet such as viruses, spyware, spam and identity theft.
Participants will also be taught how to use security tools, including how to set up a firewall, how to scan for viruses with anti-virus programs and how to use anti-spyware applications.
A fee of RM350, inclusive of lunch, tea and a certificate, will be charged per participant.
Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The workshop will be held at Informatics College in Megan Phileo Promenade in Jalan Tun Razak here.
