Pak Lah backs Proton directors’ decision

JOHANNESBURG: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has backed the decision by Proton's board of directors not to renew the contract of group chief executive officer Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff when it expires on Sept 30.

The Prime Minister said the board had the right to make the decision, adding that it was properly done and according to regulations.

Proton had announced its decision on Monday, saying an interim executive committee would be established to assume the responsibility of the group CEO, pending the appointment of a new CEO.

Asked why the board did not renew Mahaleel's contract, Abdullah said: “The board must act in the interest of Proton. They must have the interest of the national car.

“They must ensure there will be progress by Proton. I will leave them to make the best decisions for Proton.”

Abdullah said the board must have their own reasons for making the decision.

Asked about Mahaleel's replacement, Abdullah said he had not been informed about the matter yet.

However, he said some executives had served the company for a long time.

“Some executives have been in Proton for a long time, as long as 12 years. They are experienced executives and they are going to look after Proton,” he added.

Asked if the post would go to a foreigner as speculated by some newspapers, Abdullah said: “No, I have not heard about it. Please don't start speculating.”
