Najib: Cabinet wants to hear Rafidah Aziz's side of AP story

BY MAZWIN NIK ANIS

JOHOR BARU: The Cabinet wants to hear International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz’s side of the story on the approved permits issue brought up by Proton adviser Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The Cabinet is studying the matter as the former prime minister had made a statement,” said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“We would want to know Miti’s (Ministry of Trade and Industry) view,” he told newsmen yesterday when asked if the Cabinet was seeking a briefing from Rafidah on issues relating to APs, Proton and her correspondence with Dr Mahathir.

“We can use one of Cabinet’s weekly meetings for this.”

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Government was studying how the APs to import cars had affected the national automotive policy and a statement on this would be released at a suitable time.

Najib, who launched the National Co-operative Day at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia earlier, said the Government’s approach on the AP issue was to ensure transparency.

“The Prime Minister wants everything regarding AP approval to be made known to the public. There is nothing to hide,” he added.

On Proton Holdings Bhd’s decision not to renew the contract of its group chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, Najib said the move was in line with the principle of a company’ board of directors having the prerogative to decide who leads the business.

Last Monday, Proton announced that Tengku Mahaleel’s tenure would not be renewed, and that Tengku Mahaleel, who had served the company for eight years and was appointed CEO in 1997, would retire on Sept 30.

Proton also announced that an interim executive committee would be formed to assume the responsibilities of the group CEO, pending the appointment of a new CEO.
