Fogging alone not enough

MOSQUITOES may be getting more resistant to the chemicals used in fogging, as a study has shown that there is only a slight decrease in numbers after fogging operations.

Selangor Consumers Affairs, Health and Tourism committee chairman and state executive councillor Datuk Dr Lim Thuang Seng said the mosquito population was being monitored through the use of a mosquito trap.

While there was still no concrete evidence, Dr Lim warned residents not to be complacent about cleanliness in their neighbourhoods even after fogging had been carried out.

“The total number of cases in Selangor is 9,315 dengue cases as of Sept 10. Last year, the total number of cases was 9,600,” said Dr Lim.

“We have three more months to go before the end of the year, so the cases this year could surpass last year's.

“There have been 17 deaths from dengue this year already,” he added.

Dr Lim said the highest number of cases reported in August were from Kajang with 63 cases, Shah Alam (32 cases) and Subang Jaya (31 cases).

Dr Lim said the number of cases in Kajang was not accurate as the cases were not reported in a timely manner and some of them could be from the previous month.

The state government is presently focusing its efforts in Kajang to control the spread of the disease there, while other municipalities have been directed to take preventive measures.

“Places like Ampang and Gombak for the past few weeks have not had many cases but at one time last year they had a lot of cases,” said Dr Lim.

Dr Lim also urged residents to support the government in eradicating potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

“The rainy season is coming and residents should help organise gotong-royong to clean up their neighbourhoods with their respective municipal councils.

“Indiscriminate fogging in not the solution to this problem.”
