Tickled over town name

A SMALL town in Sarawak called Lachau amused the MPs.

It all began when Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (BN – Santubong) suggested a name change because it sounded like the Chinese word for the male genital.

“We should change the name of this town,” he said when interrupting Jimmy Donald (BN – Sri Aman) who was debating the Constitution (Amendment) Bill on the re-delineation of electoral boundaries in Sarawak.

Datuk Paduka Badruddin Amiruddin (BN – Jerai) then asked Jimmy: “What is the history of Lachau?”

Laughter broke out in the House.

Jimmy said lachau meant chameleon in the native language and that the town had many of them at one time.

Help for 900 entrepreneurs

THE Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) has helped 900 entrepreneurs under the Eighth Malaysian Plan and another 5,000 through training programmes, said Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Kerk Choo Ting.

“For example, in Ayer Hitam and Sri Gading in Johor, the tapioca business is so good that the supply is not enough to meet demand,” he said in his reply to Datuk Che Min Che Ahmad (BN – Pasir Puteh).

Solar hybrid proposal

A SOLAR hybrid system for Sabah is being studied to see if it can generate electricity for rural schools.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mahadzir Mohd Khir said the ministry was working together with the Energy, Water and Communications Ministry on this.

“If it is successful, schools will be able to use computers and rural students can access the Internet,” he told Fadillah Yusof (BN – Petra Jaya).
