KUANTAN: Traders in the state are warned against raising prices of goods indiscriminately in view of the coming Chinese New Year celebrations.

State Human Resources and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Fong Koong Fuee said undercover enforcement teams would be deployed to the ground to conduct random checks.

He said if they come across such unscrupulous traders, stern action would be taken against them.

“Let me remind traders to be honest in conducting their business and not look to make a quick buck.

“If we detect any traders hoarding or raising prices of essential goods, they will pay dearly for their misdeed.

“There will be no compromise. All the items would be seized and the traders would be slapped with a hefty fine,” he said in an interview last week.

Fong said so far, the situation was under control as they had yet to receive much public complaints.

He advised consumers to exercise prudence in spending and check the prices of goods.

“Based on our observation, all festive products for the Chinese New Year celebrations such as mandarin oranges are adequate in supply.

“So there is no need to rush or spend more unnecessarily,” he said, adding that his officers would monitor the situation and submit a report to him regularly.
