10 under probe over RM700,000 bribes from pusher

JOHOR BARU: A probationary inspector in his 20s is the only officer in a group of 10 policemen being investigated for bribery, falsifying reports and money laundering.

The others, aged between 20 and 50, including two policewomen, are from the rank-and-file. All are from the state narcotics department.

They are said to be involved in taking RM700,000 in bribes.

On June 23, the suspects headed by the inspector had detained a 40-year-old drug pusher in Ulu Tiram, where they found about 3.6kg of heroin in a car and cash.

They went to the suspect's house in Sri Pulai Perdana and recovered a substantial amount of money.

But in their report they said they recovered only a small amount of the loot, having divided the balance among themselves.

Bukit Aman came to know of the matter and an investigation was carried out.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Mohd Najib Aziz said the highest-ranking officer in the group so far was the inspector.

He said he was then Bukit Aman director of narcotics when he despatched a team to carry out the investigation.

“Since then the team has lodged a report on some possible wrongdoings (by the policemen),” he said, adding that the commercial crime unit was now investigating the case.

He said about RM200,000 had since been recovered.

Mohd Najib said there would be no cover-up in the case and those found guilty would face action.

“I was the one to direct my Bukit Aman officer to lodge the report to pave the way for a thorough investigation,” he said, adding that no one had been suspended as investigations were still under way.
