Nothing’s cooking at Zakaria’s satay shop

KLANG: The DZ Satay House restaurant built illegally in Pandamaran on Public Works Department land will remain closed.

Klang Municipal Council president Abdul Bakir Zin said: “The restaurant is illegal as it has no approved building plan, no business permit and sits on government land without a Temporary Occupational Licence.”

DZ Satay House restaurant belongs to Port Klang assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Md Deros, who is embroiled in a controversy for building a four-storey mansion without local council approval.

The restaurant sits on 3,994sq metre (43,000sq feet) land alienated to his wife Datin Zizah Ngah for RM46,000 following a discount.

In 1994, the land was offered at RM2 per sq feet.

The restaurant, sealed by the council on Oct 26, is a stone’s throw from the mansion.

Yesterday, Bakir called for an emergency meeting with various department heads and told officers to compile a detailed report, with photographs, on the restaurant.

“For many, it might seem to be a simple matter, that the restaurant can be demolished. But I am a government servant and there are procedures to follow. I will forward the report on Friday to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo to decide,” he said.

Asked why the buck was being passed to Dr Khir, Bakir replied: “Dr Khir is my boss and this involves an assemblyman, so it’s political.”

Bakir added that the restaurant would be monitored by enforcement officers to ensure it does not reopen.

He said Zakaria had until Nov 8 to submit his letter withdrawing from his councillor's post.

Zakaria had been appointed to the post and had accepted it on Oct 3.

“Until today, no letter has been handed to my office,” Bakir said.

“Once this matter is sorted out, MPK will go ahead with the oath-taking of the other 19 councillors, on Nov 9.

Currently, there is one position vacant each for the MIC and MCA, and two for Umno.”

On Saturday, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor advised Zakaria to withdraw from his council post and to mend his ways or risk being stripped of his Datukship.
