Stay with the PM and develop the nation, says UMNO info chief
By ZULKIFLI ABD RAHMAN
SHAH ALAM: Umno members should pay heed to the party’s advice to stay with Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and help him implement the country's development policies.
The party’s information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib said their full support was important to give the Prime Minister the confidence to carry out his responsibilities.
He said it would not be good if leaders and members were swayed and disturbed by certain issues, adding that Umno members were smart know what was best for the party and country.
Muhammad added that Umno members were intelligent and knew how to read the pulse of the country when the Kubang Pasu Umno division did not vote Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a delegate to the coming Umno general assembly next month.
“Kalau rumah tangga bergegar tak bagus untuk negara. (If the household is disturbed, it will not be good for the country).
“The members know this and they have indicated this view to Tun in Kubang Pasu. “Despite having among them someone who is a highly-respected leader here and in the world, they said that the Umno general assembly is not the place for him to become a delegate.
“They love him but they and all Umno members knew that they cannot stray from their path.
I’m sure that they will have the same discipline and resolve when all of us attend the Umno general assembly,” he told reporters after hosting a Hari Raya open house at his residence here on Tuesday.
Asked whether Dr Mahathir’s presence in the assembly might cause problems, Muhammad said the party had been through worse “storms” before this.
On his statement about former Prime Ministers having “immunity,” Muhammad said his opinion was that the former leaders had “a sort of immunity” when they criticised their successors, as Tunku Abdul Rahman did to Dr Mahathir in his newspaper column.
He said he wouldn’t know the position of the party’s disciplinary board.
On another matter, Muhammad said everyone, including the media, should stop the negative publicity on the issue of Klang municipal councillor Datuk Zakaria Md Deros.
“Don’t step on his head after he has tumbled. The Sultan has already spoken and a decision was made about him.
“I think he has had enough negative publicity already,” he added.
