Men’s group joins women in fight against violence

PETALING JAYA: Describing violence against women as an injustice, the Men’s Action Network Against Violence (MAN.V) is joining in the fight to help the weaker sex.

And the 4th White Ribbon Campaign on Nov 25 will provide the perfect platform.

Loh-Koh: ‘Respecting women and girls has to start from the home and in the schools’
The campaign is part of a worldwide initiative since 1989 to commemorate the massacre of 14 women in Montreal, Canada.

MAN.V coordinator David Anthony called on men to wear white ribbons at the campaign as a show of support.

“This is the largest effort in the world, to get men to make a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He explained that the violence concerned not only physical harm but also emotional, psychological, and verbal violence.

All Women’s Action Society (Awam) president Judith Loh-Koh pointed out that violence against women was not a women’s issue, but a “human issue.”

“There’s this whole aspect of respecting women and girls, and it has to start from the home and in the schools,” she stressed.

Jointly organised by Awam and MAN.V and funded by the United Nations, the campaign will be held at the 1-Utama Shopping Centre from 11am to 5pm, in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Celebrities such as Malaysian A1 GP driver Alex Yoong, artistes Reshmonu, Manbai, Vick Teo and local band Evenstarr are lending support to the campaign.

Datuk Param Cumaraswamy, a former president of the Bar Council and a founder member of the council’s Human Rights and Legal Aid committees, will launch the campaign.
