Rep says non-bumis get main share of contracts

FOR every RM1mil contract awarded to a bumiputra, only 20% went directly to him, according to Umno Youth delegate Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

“From a check done by Umno Youth, almost 80% went to non-bumiputras.

“This is because the suppliers are (mostly) non-bumiputras,” he said when debating the motion on economy and education.

Reezal Merican also said contracts should not be given to the same contractors every year.

“It does not make sense for a contract worth hundreds of millions of ringgit awarded in the 1990s to be given to the same party years after,” he added.

Selangor delegate Datuk Salamon Selamat said great development plans were of no use if the Malays were left out.

Federal Territory representative Rizalman Mokhtar expressed disappointment in what he claimed was the action of some bumiputra chief executive officers who were unwilling to help other Malays get involved in business.

He said that although they were professionals, educated and had some good fortune they did not see it fit to help their own to prosper along.

Malacca delegate Datuk Idris Harun criticised Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and International Herald Tribune journalist Thomas Fuller for claiming that non-Malays were being marginalised.

“Ask Lee Kuan Yew to study history again. Singapore was founded by a Malay and our history is the same,” he added.

Idris also called for the sacking of Fuller for writing a degrading article on Malaysia that claimed that the Chinese and Indians had been cheated by the Malays.

Idris caused a stir when he started reading out the article and speaking in English.

“These orang putih (white people) think we are stupid, but actually they are more stupid,” he charged.
