Cabinet reshuffle?
KUALA LUMPUR: Talk is rife that a Cabinet reshuffle is in the works, following the appointment of Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib as a senator last week.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, when asked about the speculation, refused to deny or confirm a change in his ministers.
Instead, Abdullah turned around and asked newsmen: “Can you tell me the date?”
Pressed with the question of the former Selangor mentri besar’s appointment, Abdullah said Muhammad Taib deserved to be a senator.
The Prime Minister was asked about the issue after he opened the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show 2006 (Maha 2006) in Serdang, near here, yesterday.
Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Mohamed Nor Yakcop’s term as senator will end in January, which also adds weight to expectation that there would be a Cabinet reshuffle.
In a related development, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Aziz Shamsuddin has denied that he had submitted a resignation letter to Abdullah.
”I have not resigned. I will serve my country as long as the Prime Minister wants me to do so,” he said.
Aziz, 68, is the Shah Alam MP and a former deputy Education Minister. He served as a political secretary to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for 20 years.
Aziz’s name was among those mentioned as wanting to step down, thus requiring a minor reshuffle.
