A passion for serving the community

NOT many people excel academically, are totally committed to their career and at the same time actively serve the community.

Village boy Lim Soon Kam, 28, is proof that a person can do all these if they want to.

Lim was awarded the Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards 2006 (TOYM) for Moral or Religious Leadership by Junior Chambers International (JCI) Malaysia.

The award is in recognition of his 13 years of outstanding contribution towards the development of academic, moral and spiritual education of children and youths from the Jenjarom community.

Last Sunday, some 800 people, mostly villagers, gathered to celebrate his achievement and among them were Teluk Datuk assemblyman Datuk Ei Kim Hock as well as former teachers and community leaders.

“Lim is a model of what today’s youths can do for their community and I am very proud of him.

“I hope he will continue to actively help improve the lot of others,” said Ei.

Ei said Lim and his friends had helped the Jenjarom children and youths by promoting education, the need for moral conduct and spirituality.

Lim is currently attached to the Queensland Universtity of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

He is pursuing his Phd in sustainable construction.
