Don’t blame road condition for accidents
By YENG AI CHUN
MOTORISTS should exercise cau- tion when driving on “bad” road stretches.
They should not blame the road condition for any mishap on such stretches, said North Seberang Prai district public order and traffic chief Asst Supt Abd Aziz Daud.
“If the road is uneven or has a sharp turn, one has to be think rationally and not press the accelerator,” he said in an interview at the North Seberang Prai district headquarters in Kepala Batas recently.
ASP Abd Aziz said this when commenting on the number of accidents along the North-South Expressway starting from Sungai Bum-bung Lima to Permatang Pauh (Km114 to Km132).
He said while the figure was not alarming, motorists should still take precautions.
Last year, there were 18 deaths along this stretch with seven more reported up to October this year. Most of the accidents involved cars, said ASP Abd Aziz said.
He said there were 203 accidents this year involving cars compared with 87 cases involving motorcycles.
“The stretch along km116 and km122 after the Sungai Dua toll plaza is a tricky stretch. Most accidents happen on this stretch.
“It can be attributed to the uneven road and puddles of rain water.
“But one can’t just blame the roads, one must also practice safe driving,” he said.
Abd Aziz said vehicles that stop at the emergency lane of the highway also contributed to accidents.
“You have lorries and trucks stopping at the emergency lane without putting up warning signs. Unsuspecting motorists could just ram into them. We have had quite a few such cases,” he explained.
Abd Aziz urged motorists to put up a warning sign and contact PLUS immediately when their vehicles broke down.
Abd Aziz said it all boils down to the attitude of the drivers.
