MAS plane makes emergency landing

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 with 284 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at Swedens Arlanda airport on Friday after bits of metal dropped from one of its engines during take off.
A MAS spokesman told The Star the twin-engine Kuala Lumpur-bound plane was instructed to return to the airport after an air traffic controller alerted the pilots of the incident.
The air traffic controller instructed flight MH09, some 15 minutes after it took off, to return to the airport when ground staff found bits of metal and insulation materials near the runway.
The authority also temporarily closed the airport and deployed staff to clear the runway of any fallen parts from the plane..
The plane, which took off at 1.55pm, had to dump its fuel over the Baltic Sea to make the emergency landing some 50 minutes later. The plane landed safely.
The spokesman said the Swedish Accident Investigation Board and the airlines technical handling agent were investigating the cause of the incident.
