SWEET-TOOTH Kelantanese are struggling to cope with diabetes as the state continues to report an increase in diabetes-related ailments.
Many residents in Kelantan suffer from cardiovascular disea- ses arising from diabetes which contributed between 20% and 30% to the total death count in the state.
State Health Department director Dr Mohd Kamil Hassan said there was an increase of 13% new diabetes-related cases last year in-cluding feet ulcers, kidney failure, organ infection and eyesight pro-blem.
Speaking at the World Diabetes Day awareness programme in Bac-hok recently, Dr Mohd Kamil said 245 patients had their limps amputated last year.
He urged the people to watch their diet and observe healthy food preparation.
The awareness programme was officiated by Bachok district consumers council chairman Nik Yusuf Nik Mat, who is also a special officer to Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin.
