Shot victim causes robber to shoot himself

KUALA LUMPUR: A medicine shop owner, shot by a robber, managed to put up a struggle and caused the gunman to shoot himself.

The man, his faced covered with a towel, had walked into the shop in Jalan Mergastua, Kepong Baru, at 3.45pm and whipped out a pistol.

He ordered Soh Chee Keong, 33, to hand over the money in the cash register.

WHERE IT HAPPENED: The medicine shop in Kepong Baru that a gunman had tried to rob yesterday.
Soh, however, decided to take him on and a struggle ensued, causing the robber to fire a shot, which hit him in the neck.

Bleeding profusely, Soh continued to put up a struggle, forcing the gunman to open fire again, this time hitting himself.

Injured and bleeding, the gunman dashed out of the shop empty-handed and fled on a motorcycle.

Soh has been admitted to the Selayang Hospital and is in a stable condition.

An employee of an adjacent shop, who did not want to be identified, said that she had seen the man, in his 40s, parked his motorcycle outside her premises and walked into the shop with his face covered with a towel.

“Several minutes later, I heard the sounds of two shots and saw the gunman, who was bleeding, running out of the victim’s shop and fleeing the scene,” she added.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm K. Kumaran said police were investigating the case as attempted robbery and discharging of firearms.

He urged the public who witnessed the incident or had information on the gunman's whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.

He also advised hospitals, clinics and traditional medicine practitioners to contact the nearest police station if a man tried to seek treatment for a serious injury caused by a firearm.
