Charity to usher in new year
PENANG: Instead of a glittering fireworks display, the Penang Golden 2007 New Year countdown celebration at Gurney Drive will culminate with the release of thousands of balloons.
Event organiser CreatiVision D.C. Sdn Bhd managing director Adelyn Lim said in a statement yesterday that they had decided to do away with the fireworks display in consideration of the floods affecting several states.
“Instead we will be selling the balloons during the countdown to raise funds for the flood victims,” she said in a statement.
“The public can donate at least RM3 for each balloon. CreatiVision will sponsor 5,000 balloons and set up special kiosks to sell the balloons and collect donations during the countdown.”
Lim added that Malton Berhad would take the lead by donating RM50,000 to kick-start the campaign.
For those who want to make donations by cheque, they can write “For Flood Victims” at the back of the cheque made payable to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society and hand them over to authorised kiosks.
State executive councillor Da- tuk Dr Teng Hock Nan and CreatiVision's representatives will hand over the donations collected to the Red Crescent Society in a ceremony on Jan 5.
