Lens cleaner to remain on shelves
PETALING JAYA: Contact lens solution manufacturer Bausch & Lomb will not suspend sales of its product in Malaysia despite a reported spate of fungal corneal infections in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Its South-East Asia managing director Foo Eng Chuan said they would not suspend the sales of ReNu multi-purpose solution, as there had been no report of corneal infection in Malaysia so far.
Last week, foreign newspapers reported that 22 contact lens users had been infected in Singapore since last May but only one of the patients had used ReNu.
In Hong Kong, 12 ReNu users were reportedly infected between June last year and January. The cornea infection, called fungal keratitis, may be caused by infection, trauma or allergy.
We have voluntarily suspended sales of the product in the two countries to assist their health ministries investigate the causes of the infection, Foo told a press conference here yesterday.
At this point, ReNu is one of the factors, but it has not been conclusively proven that ReNu is linked, as there are a few other factors such as improper care or hygiene.
