Penang has 486 scoring all As
PENANG: A total 486 students in Penang scored straight As in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination compared with 343 the year before.
Acting state education director Abdul Rahman Yob said of the 486 students, 81 obtained all 1As compared with 38 previously.
Of the 20,497 candidates who sat for SPM last year, 18,339 or 89.4% passed the exam, he said. The passing rate in 2004 was 87.7%.
Abdul Rahman said this was the first time that Penang produced a 13 1A scorer in Lim Wei Chia from SMJK Chung Ling Butterworth.
Three students from the state have also been listed among the top scorers in the country. They are 12 1A scorers Mu’adz Mohd Zubir from SMKA Al-Mashoor (L) and SMK Dato Onn student D. Renuka Rasmani while the third, Hue Wei Fen from SMJK Union, scored 11 1As.
Visually impaired student Noor Izati Meor Samsudin from SMK(P) St George scored 4 As, 3 Bs, 1C and 1D.
SMJK Jit Sin in Bukit Mertajam topped the list of schools with the most straight 1A scorers.
The school has 18 students who scored straight 1As, followed by SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam (10), SMK Perempuan St George (7) and SMJK Chung Ling (6).
In BUTTERWORTH, the 13 1A scorer Lim Wei Chia said she often watched movies starring her favourite actor Takeshi Kaneshiro and admitted that she did not follow a study timetable.
But, when it came to doing her revision, she had to forgo her favourite movies and give her all in her studies.
Wei Chia, 18, said she listened attentively in class and consistently did her homework and workbook exercises without forcing herself to study.
“To loosen up a bit, I watched movies and chatted with friends on the Internet,” she said.
Tailor Lim Chiang Seng, 47, was a happy father who planned to reward his daughter with a trip to the Gold Coast, Australia.
“Wei Chia previously scored 8As in the PMR exams and 6As in the UPSR exams. I will reward her with the trip as she deserves it,” said Lim.
Wei Chia, who plans to pursue her studies in pharmacy, said the family went hiking to Cherok Tok Kun every Sunday because she believed that staying healthy helped her concentrate in her studies.
