Ex-Proton exec claims trial to graft charge
KUALA LUMPUR: A former Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton) styling executive officer pleaded not guilty to agreeing to accept a RM90,000 bribe from a marketing manager two-and-a-half years ago.
Zaharrudin Ahmed, 34, claimed trial to agreeing to accept the bribe from Ara Borgstena Sdn Bhd marketing manager A. Hafidz Mohd Sarif as an inducement to help the car accessories dealer get projects to supply car seat fabrics for Proton cars.
Zaharrudin, also Proton’s former colour and trim unit chief, was said to have committed the offence at Mint Hotel car park here on Aug 18, 2003.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Sinti from the Anti-Corruption Agency urged the Sessions Court to set bail at RM50,000 in one surety.
Pleading for a lower bail, Zaharrudin said his current salary was not enough to pay a higher bail, adding that he had to take care of his unemployed wife and young children.
Judge Rohani Ismail set bail at RM25,000 in one surety. Zaharrudin posted bail.
The court set May 10 for mention of the case.
