Two more sports schools

SPORTS development has received a major boost under the 9MP with RM620.8mil allocated to it.

This suggests that the Government has certainly recognised the importance of sports to nation-building as the sum is more than double the RM307.2mil set aside under the Eighth Malaysia Plan.

Priority has been given to the grassroots – two more sports schools will be built in the next five years. The existing two are in Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur and Bandar Penawar in Johor Baru.

Of the total allocation of RM620.8mil, RM299.9mil will be utilised for building 13 multi-purpose sports complexes while RM280.9mil has been set aside for the upgrading, expansion and maintenance of existing sports facilities at the district level.

Facilities for sports such as badminton and futsal as well as space for meetings and other community-related activities will be provided at these complexes.

The remaining RM40mil has been earmarked for athletes’ development programmes. A pool of physical education teachers will be deployed to primary schools while athletics and gymnastics will be included as part of the education curriculum.

To manage and organise sports, it is expected that about 2,010 officials bearers of the respective sports associations will be trained annually.

Emphasis will continue to be given to the eight core sports – athletics, aquatics, badminton, tenpin bowling, football, gymnastics, hockey and squash.

Other sports will not be neglected, as the Talent Development Programme will provide training to 14,750 young people in 37 sports events.

A greater effort to prepare a larger pool of athletes for international competitions will be made under the 9MP and a more systematic approach for identification and preparation of athletes adopted.

The Athletes Preparation Programme run by the National Sports Council will continue to play a vital role in preparing athletes for international meets.

Its emphasis is to produce medal winners for the 2006 Asian Games, 2008 Olympic Games,2010 Asian and Commonwealth Games and other major international championships.

Meanwhile, various programmes and recreational activities will also be organised to promote mass participation in sports with the aim of creating healthy lifestyles.

The Government expects 50% of the population to be directly involved in fitness activities by 2010.

To ensure development of such programmes, 24,000 instructors and facilitators will be recruited and trained through courses to be conducted locally and aboard.
