Ex-child hero hopes villagers will also benefit
By K. SUTHAKAR
KAMPUNG Losong hero Mohamed Nor Omar is hoping there will be something in store for the villagers in the 9th Malaysia Plan.
The 60-year-old has been using his rickety Honda motorcycle for 40 years due to poor public transportation system in the village.
Kampung Losong, which is famed for its keropok (seafood crackers) and keropok lekor (seafood crackers), is only 7km from Kuala Terengganu.

Mohamed Nor, who is still using a rickety motorcycle after 40 years, hopes there will be something in store for villagers under the 9MP. |
“It should include smaller towns such as Kuala Terengganu and the surrounding areas,” said Mohamed Nor, who was the country's first recipient of the Hang Tuah Medal Award in 1960.
“There are no buses plying the route to Kampung Losong and the womenfolk have to depend on kereta sapu (unlicensed taxis) to go to town,” he said.
He proposed that the state Museum, which is located near the village, run a bus service.
“This will benefit visitors to the museum as well as the villagers,” said Mohamed Nor, who once worked as a security guard at the museum.
He said people have to wait for a long time to catch a bus from the town to their homes in the outskirts.
“I have even seen students from Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (Kustem) squeezing into vans to go back to their campus in Mengabang Telipot, after spending the day in town,” he said.
Mohamed Nor became known at the age of 13 when he rescued a 12-year-old girl from drowning in Sungai Terengganu, which is near his house.
Three months later he was in the news again when he rescued an eight-year-old boy from drowning in the same river.
He received the country's most prestigious bravery award from the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj at Merdeka Stadium on Oct 20, 1960.
