Special focus on greens production

THE Government aims to increase agricultural production through measures such as new land development, replanting, and land consolidation and rehabilitation.

Production of crude palm oil (CPO) is expected to grow by 5.5% per year on average during the 9MP period, compared with 6.7% in 2001-2005. This is based on the expansion in planted area and higher oil extraction rate.

The development of the rubber sub-sector will be focused on accelerating efforts to consolidate and rehabilitate rubber smallholdings to increase productivity.

An optimum area of 800,000ha will be maintained as rubber zone by 2020 to meet the requirement of the domestic rubber processing industries.

The tobacco growing industry will be further restructured in line with the commitment to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

The production of sawlogs will continue to be based on sustainable forest management.

The food commodities sub-sector is forecast to expand by 7.6% per year through improvements in efficiency and productivity as well as expansion in hectarage. Exports of food commodities will be boosted.

The production of padi is expected to rise to meet the target of self-sufficiency level of 90%.

Fruits and vegetables will get special attention because of the high development potential. The Green Book Programme will be reactivated.

Under the 9MP, fisheries production is expected to increase while the potential of medium and large-scale aquaculture, both inland and open sea will be harnessed by establishing more production areas and greater private sector participation.

Production of halal food will be further promoted to take advantage of the vast potential of the halal export market.
