Promote charm without harm

A sum of RM652mil had been set aside for sustainable tourism development to ensure preservation of natural habitats and environment under the 9MP.

The Government would concentrate on sustainable tourism development, as it has become an increasingly important factor to attract foreign tourists from Asean countries, Europe and America.

A sum of RM1.8bil was allocated to the tourism industry to ensure that it becomes a major source of new growth and key driver in the development of the services sector.

Out of this figure, RM1.03bil had been set aside to provide adequate infrastructure, facilities and maintenance of existing tourism-related amenities.

The report also stated that the focus will also be on improving accessibility through improved air and ground transport including hassle-free travel with on-line visa and multiple entries permits.

It said private sector participation in the development of innovative products and services will be further enhanced through improved incentives and adequate funding.

There was a marked increase in no-frill air travel packages offered by Air Asia, which played an important role in accelerating the pace of local tourism as well as tapping new regional market segments.

Since year 2000, Air Asia flew 277,000 passengers that swelled to 5 million in 2005. The airline also extended its reach in the region through joint ventures with foreign partners, bringing tourists from surrounding regions.

Based on the report, the introduction of low-cost carriers that provided for more affordable air travel to various local destinations, especially to Sabah and Sarawak contributed to the growth of local travel and tour.

The implementation of the five-day week for public sector beginning July last year also provided a boost to domestic tourism.

Domestic tourism continued to be an important component of the industry and the number of domestic tourism trips increased by 30.1% from 12.3 million in the year 2000 to 16 million last year.

The report said rising household income, improved quality of life and regular travel was becoming a part of the Malaysian lifestyle.

Another trend contributing to domestic tourism was the rising number of corporate retreats, family recreation and youth camps held at various tourist spots.
