Aggressive strategy to lure tourists
TOURIST arrivals to Malaysia are poised to reach 24.6 million by 2010, with the bulk of travellers comprising intra-regional tourists.
According to the 9MP, there will be 791 million or 80% intra-regional travellers, while the rest being long haul travellers.
The report added that based on World Tourism Organisation forecasts, international arrivals worldwide would reach one billion by 2010.
Asean countries especially Singapore and Thailand will remain the largest source of tourist arrivals to Malaysia.
The country is expected to benefit from the greater intra-Asean travel trade through intense regional co-operation, cultural and information exchanges, development of joint tour packages and establishment of special arrangements for Asean travellers.
The report said outside Asean, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong as a group would be the single largest tourist-generating market, followed by India and West Asia.
Apart from that, the report said more efforts would be made to generate greater interest among potential tourists from traditional markets like Europe, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States to visit Malaysia.
Having that in mind, the strategy in the next five years would focus on the tourism potential as an important source for generating foreign exchange earnings, entrepreneurship development and employment.
