Projects to reduce pockets of poverty
THE distributional agenda will be pursued more firmly to ensure the achievement of a more equitable distribution of the benefits of economic development by all Malaysians.
Strategies will be focused on creating a more balance and equitable participation among and within ethnic groups primarily through capacity building and raising competitiveness.
Efforts will be undertaken to eradicate pockets of poverty among the disadvantaged groups, in particular the orang asli in the peninsular aside from measures to reduce poverty in rural and urban areas, as well as among bumiputras in Sabah and Sarawak through income generating projects and employment.

The coverage of the packaged programmes under the SPKR will be extended to all target groups, particularly in areas with a high concentration of the hardcore poor.
The programmes will emphasise more to human capital development and capacity building.
Access to credit facilities will be further improved and by 2010, the AIM is expected to extend micro-credit facilities to an additional 69,200 participants and increasing members to 203,200.
To improve coverage and service delivery to the hardcore poor, the AIM will concentrate on operations in those states with high number of hardcore poor households, namely Sabah, Terengganu and Perak.
Financial institutions will be urged to provide innovative and pro-poor financing facilities to the poor to improve their livelihood.
Poverty eradication initiatives by the public sector, NGOs and the private sector will be streamlined while coordination and monitoring will be enhanced at all levels.
Towards this, a national poverty database will be established while poverty mapping will be developed in selected urban and rural areas to assist in designing programmes.
Hence, rural communities will be given better access to new technologies and modern farming methods as well as off-farm economic activities.
For the orang asli, focus will be given to increase their access to income generating projects such as cultivation of food crops, handicraft and tourism as well as provision of employment opportunities, infrastructure and other basic amenities.
