Environs monitoring to be stepped up

ENVIRONMENTAL monitoring and stewardship will be stepped up under the 9MP.

A new Clean Air Action Plan will be developed and implemented, with detailed studies to be undertaken to improve air quality in urban areas.

One of the key measures will be adoption of the Euro 2M specifications, under which the sulphur content in diesel and petrol will be reduced from 3,000 parts per million (ppm) to 500ppm and from 1,500ppm to 500ppm respectively.

To further improve river and groundwater quality, the integrated river basin management approach will be intensified, with a view to reducing the number of polluted rivers.

Surveillance of marine waters will be stepped up to control illegal discharge of pollutants.

Also, in line with the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management, a Solid Waste Department will be established.

Emphasis will be placed on improving unsanitary landfills as well as constructing new sanitary landfills and transfer stations with integrated material recovery facilities.

Under the National Landscape Policy, more areas will be gazetted as green lungs.

On the biodiversity front, apart from stepping up efforts to protect critical habitats, the Guidelines for Access and Benefit Sharing of Biological Resources will be developed.

These will ensure a more equitable sharing of benefits from the use of biodiversity resources as well as address bio-piracy.

As for the marine and coastal areas, a comprehensive management plan for coastal forests will be developed to check the mangrove depletion rate. A Coastal Vulnerability Index will also be introduced to strengthen coastal zone management.

In addition, a Malaysian Sustainable Development Indicators system will be developed, benchmarked against existing international systems.
