28.96m people in 2010

THE country's population will reach 28.96 million in 2010, based on a projection growth of an average of 1.6% per year.

The drop in the population-growth rate, compared with the previous Malaysia Plan, is due to more Malaysians delaying their marriages to pursue higher education and career advancement.

In 2010, the total fertility rate will decline to an estimated 2.48 per family.

A total of 63.6% of the total population will be aged between 15 and 64 by the end of this period, while those above 65 will increase to 4.7%.

The Government expected that 63.8% of the population would be living in urban areas, resulting in a demand for more houses, schools and employment.

By 2010, Malaysian men are expected to live up to 71 year old while women will live up to 77.1. The longer life span is attributed to the improvements in accessibility to health and medical services.
